Ep. 106 – Batman Beyond – Revenant & Babel

Initially slated to be a single-review episode, Cal & Liam called an audible and decided to bring forth a Giant-Size Double Feature on this week’s DCAU Review, tackling both Batman Beyond episodes “Revenant” and “Babel.” Truly a tale of two episodes as both feature returning villains, the Good Brothers discuss the shortcomings of another Willie Watt centric episode, a lackluster culmination to the final battle between Terry and Willie, an homage to another classic Spider-Man visual and a why one host is happy that this is the last appearance for this villain. Moving on two the second episode our hosts discuss fantastic visuals in Shriek’s return, Batman vs. zoo animals, why this episode feels like the passing of the Bat-mantle, discovering more about the future Batmobile’s capabilities, using traditional Batman-villain tropes in a new effective way, a trilogy of scenes where the voice acting is incredibly powerful and a soundtrack that brings back the classic Batman themes. Ep. 105 – Batman Beyond – Mind Games

Continuing their month of Batman Beyond reviews, the Good Brothers discuss the episode “Mind Games” which has a few connections to other DCAU shows as well as nods to other comic universes. The hosts discuss in detail the mid-episode battle versus the end battle, the unclear nature of some of the villains’ powers, a soundtrack that impresses and the most visually striking scene of the entire episode. Ep. 104 – Batman Beyond – Rats

A new month means a new series for discussion and the Good Brothers are returning to the future with  a review of the Batman Beyond episode “Rats.” The hosts poke some serious holes in the plot and discuss Dana’s potential undiagnosed low self-esteem issues. They also continue their case for why #DanaDeservesBetter and once again make an appeal for the full Beyond soundtrack to be released. Plus a myriad of visual Easter Eggs are discussed along with why this was one of the voice actors’ final gig and the introduction of the Mad Stan character and why parts of this episode seem to ring true to modern society in the year 2020. Ep. 103 – JLU – The Greatest Story Never Told

Wrapping up their month of Justice League Unlimited coverage, the Good Brothers review the Booster Gold tale “The Greatest Story Never Told” from JLU season one. Ep. 102 – JLU – For The Man Who Has Everything

The Good Brothers are back as they continue reviewing episodes of Justice League Unlimited with this week’s episode “For the Man Who Has Everything.” Our hosts discuss the original comic written by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons on which the episode is based, why this episode was the perfect follow up to the pilot that expanded the Justice League roster, Eric Roberts perfect portrayal of the slimy Mongul, how this compares to another dream-sequence DCAU episode, some really mind-blowing Easter Eggs in both voice acting and music and why Mongul would be #Cancelled if he was living in 2020. Ep. 101 – JLU – Initiation

After last week’s historic 100th episode, the Good Brothers return, picking up right where “Starcrossed” ended, reviewing the very first episode of Justice League Unlimited titled “Initiation.” Joining the hosts this week for the very first time is special correspondent James Strecker from the Watchtower Database. Join the hosts as they delve into how the start of JLU influenced James and the others to start their website, allowed them to take their passion to new heights with a larger universe and initial thoughts when as children, the hosts first learned of the expanded Justice League roster. Ep. 100 – JL -Starcrossed Parts I, II & III

It’s the landmark 100th episode of the DCAU Review, and The Good Brothers are reviewing one of the most pivotal episodes in the history of the DCAU. Cal & Liam discuss the events leading up to Starcrossed and break down one of the most heart-wrenching romances to playout in the DCAU, while also talking about the shortcomings of the CGI mixed into the digital animation, the decision to make the main baddie a Hawkman-ish character, the awesomeness of the Batcave battle scene, and easter eggs from Batman ’66. Ep. 96 – Elseworlds – Fleischer Superman: The Mad Scientist & The Mechanical Monsters

Week 2 of our second annual Elseworlds month is here and we are taking a ride in the way back machine to 1941 and reviewing a pair of the first Superman animated shorts ever produced with the Max Fleischer Superman cartoons “Superman” and “The Mechanical Monsters.” This week our hosts share their first exposure to these classic cartoons, give a little bit of a history lesson about their origin, and then proceed to give a full scorecard for each of them. The Good Brothers talk the choice to go with minimal dialogue, the uniqueness of them being public domain, the animation technique created by the Fleischer brothers that makes these cartoons so beautiful and timeless and some fascinating parallels to DCAU episodes. Ep. 95 – Elseworlds – Superman: Red Son

 

RedsonAs the month of February draws to a close, our hosts are leaving the DCAU and kicking off our second annual Elseworlds month. This time the Good Brothers will be doing all Elseworlds Superman tales, and kicking things off with the brand new Superman: Red Son movie by Warner Brothers Animation, with executive producer Bruce Timm. There are plenty of ties to the DCAU as you’ll hear as the hosts break down some of the differences between the movie and source material, why some of the changes may work, while others leave character motivations questionable at best and why the complete changes left one host particularly sour. Additionally, the hosts discuss the beautiful animation, a well-executed Russian-sounding soundtrack, non-Russian actors speaking the length of the film in Russian accents, an exciting DCAU voice cameo and a recommendation for the listeners on whether to check out this film or not! Ep. 94 – BTAS – Joker’s Wild

The 94th edition of the DCAU Review is here and this week the hosts review another classic tale featuring The Clown Prince of Crime in Batman: The Animated Series episode entitled “Joker’s Wild.”The brothers discuss a strong soundtrack and comment on how each Joker episode features a unique sound while still using the familiar Joker theme. With a pot that includes insurance fraud and a greedy casino owner trying to recoup money from his investment, the brothers poke a few minor holes in the plot and have loads to say about another AKOM animated show with some glaring mistakes and why the brothers feel a consistency within being off-model goes a long way. All of this and dissection of some of Mark Hammil’s best lines of the episode along with a full scorecard on this week’s all-new DCAU Review!
