Ep. 118 – BTAS – Moon of The Wolf

The unofficial Creature Feature month continues on the DCAU Review as the Good Brothers continue their month of Batman: The Animated Series coverage. This week our hosts review “Moon of the Wolf” which is based on a 1970s Neal Adams era Batman comic of the same title. Unfortunately for the hosts the comic seems to have been a bit more interesting as they quickly learn, due partly in fact to the return of Akom Production Co. as the team responsible for the animation. Other topics discussed include the lack of intelligence from each featured character, Bruce Wayne’s body dysmorphia, a soundtrack that introduces electric guitar for the first time to the DCAU soundtrack, speculation on the purpose of the cliffhanger ending, and a in-depth look at “Werewolfism.” Plus our hosts preview next week’s episode and highlight some connections from this episode to the larger DCAU continuity.

Have you ever wanted to hear the Good Brothers discuss the NBA career accomplishments of Shaquille O’Neal? Well, you are in luck because this week’s episode reviews the Season 2 Static Shock episode “Static Shaq” where “Big Aristotle” makes his DCAU debut. The hosts talk about grading seasons 1 and 2 on a curve, the animation looking a little bit like a Robert Smigel cartoon, similarities to the Scooby-Doo/Globetrotters crossover and other Hanna-Barbera toons, and second-guessing if Shaq was actually the one to voice himself in this episode. Cal also doubles down on his issues with the soundtrack and the hosts discuss how they might have pitched a Shaq appearance if they had been in charge in 2002. Ep. 111 – STAS – The Main Man Part I & II

As the Good Brothers continue their June reviews of the Man of Steel they come upon one of the series-defining episodes of Superman; The Animated Series  when Lobo makes his first animated appearance ever in the DCAU in the episodes “The Main Man Part 1 & 2.” Cal and Liam discuss how monumental it was at the time for this adult character that started out as a riff on 90’s gritty comics to appear on a children’s cartoon and then begin discussing the ins and out of the plot that at times feels right out of a Looney Toons cartoon. The hosts also discuss the myriad of interesting visuals on The Preserver’s ship, including one important background cameo that would be a storyline thread in another DCAU show. The guys also talk about the great soundtrack and the uniqueness that adds to the Lobo character itself as well as the iconic voice performance from  Brad Garrett and an early appearance from another voice actor that would go on to play an important baddie on Batman Beyond. All of this, a full scorecard and much more await you on this week’s DCAU Review

Also, the hosts talk about a guest vocal performance that has to carry most of the show and how well they think they handled that responsibility, what happened when they went to listen to this week’s soundtrack, some stunning visuals with a mix of off-model characters and a very specific homage to the Max Fleischer Superman cartoons.
