Ep. 98 – Elseworlds – LOSH: Man of Tomorrow

The penultimate edition of Elseworlds month of 2020, features one of the lesser-known and appreciated DC Animated shows, Legion of Superheroes and the Good Brothers tackle the pilot episode “Man of Tomorrow” on this week’s podcast. Join Cal & Liam as they discuss how this series was rumored to have been greenlit, this version of the Legion and their Fatal Five rogues, an unfamiliar voice cast, and a discussion about whether this show could potentially suffer from having an identity crisis. As we continue our Elseworlds month, tackling Superman as he appears in non-DCAU form, we move back to the world of producer James Tucker’s Batman The Brave and the Bold with this week’s introduction of the Man of Steel titled “Battle of the Superheroes.” Join our hosts as they break down a love-letter to a time where everything had to be a little lighter, as this episode pays homage to many events that actually occurred in DC continuity. Ep. 96 – Elseworlds – Fleischer Superman: The Mad Scientist & The Mechanical Monsters

Week 2 of our second annual Elseworlds month is here and we are taking a ride in the way back machine to 1941 and reviewing a pair of the first Superman animated shorts ever produced with the Max Fleischer Superman cartoons “Superman” and “The Mechanical Monsters.” This week our hosts share their first exposure to these classic cartoons, give a little bit of a history lesson about their origin, and then proceed to give a full scorecard for each of them. The Good Brothers talk the choice to go with minimal dialogue, the uniqueness of them being public domain, the animation technique created by the Fleischer brothers that makes these cartoons so beautiful and timeless and some fascinating parallels to DCAU episodes. Ep. 95 – Elseworlds – Superman: Red Son

 

RedsonAs the month of February draws to a close, our hosts are leaving the DCAU and kicking off our second annual Elseworlds month. This time the Good Brothers will be doing all Elseworlds Superman tales, and kicking things off with the brand new Superman: Red Son movie by Warner Brothers Animation, with executive producer Bruce Timm. There are plenty of ties to the DCAU as you’ll hear as the hosts break down some of the differences between the movie and source material, why some of the changes may work, while others leave character motivations questionable at best and why the complete changes left one host particularly sour. Additionally, the hosts discuss the beautiful animation, a well-executed Russian-sounding soundtrack, non-Russian actors speaking the length of the film in Russian accents, an exciting DCAU voice cameo and a recommendation for the listeners on whether to check out this film or not! Ep. 51 – Elseworlds – Hunted

The Good Brothers put a bow on their Elseworlds of Batman month on this week’s episode. All month, the guys have been celebrating the 80th anniversary of The Dark Knight by reviewing various incarnations of Batman in animated form. This week they wrap up with the pilot episode of 2013 3D-animated show Beware The Batman. Topics include Alfred as more than Batman’s chef, the series creators choice to be wildly different with choosing Batman’s rogues, the indie-rock theme song, some familiar names involved in the production and voice cast, and whether this episode piques the interest enough to watch the rest of the series.

The silver episode of the DCAU Review continues the Good Brothers’ exploration of the Elseworlds of Batman, as they celebrate Batman’s 80th birthday. This week they’re covering Batman: Under The Red Hood, the 2010 DVD release that adapts the Under The Hood storyline from the comics. The guys talk having the comic writer adapting his own story into animated form and whether that might have been a detriment to the animated feature. They also discuss a bloated story, a large voice cast with a few inconsistent performances and the mashup of animation styles used.
